It really doesn't happen that often, but sometimes a deal 
does go sour: You don't get your money or your money's worth.


You do have some recourse, though.


First, if you responded to an advertisement, contact the 
publication where you saw it. 


Second, contact the American Philatelic Society or American 
Stamp Dealers Association if the other party is a member. Both
organizations have ethics codes, and will try to mediate the 
problem. If the party-in-the-wrong isn't a member, the A-P-S 
will keep the complaint on file anyway, in case he or she ever 
wants to join. The A-P-S is in State College, Pennsylvania, or 
on the Internet at stamps-dot-org. The A-S-D-A is in Glen Cove, 
New York, and at A-S-D-A-online-dot-com.


Of course, an ounce of prevention and all that stuff. Check 
references with these groups before committing to a deal, and 
start small until you get a measure of the other party's 
honesty.


And remember that some bad deals are really just 
misunderstandings.
