April 1-2, 2000:
Borrowing from other countries.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This past week, the U-S Postal Service honored the centennial
of the Navy's submarine service with five new stamps. They're
available either in a booklet or a sheet.
The sheet is all one design, the 33-cent Los Angeles-class
submarine....but the booklet is something new, a "prestige
booklet." There are five different submarine stamps, each a
different denomination, and the three-dollar-twenty-cent
priority mail stamp is twice the size of the others. Each
of the denominations covers a current rate. It's an idea
that's been used in other countries.
Another idea making the rounds, particularly in British
Commonwealth countries, that we might see here soon, is
personalized stamps: Postage stamps with YOUR picture on them.
So far these are only sold at special major stamp shows, and
the photos are taken right on the spot by postal agents.
After all, can you imagine what would happen if customers were
allowed to put any photo they wanted on their stamps?
And that's stamp collecting this week.
