August 26-27, 2000:
Finding a stamp dealer
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
While some dealers do still have stores, that's not where
you'll find most of them: Rents in malls are too high, traffic
on main streets too light. Many dealers now work out of their
homes, in offices, or at stamp shows.
You can find lists of stamp shows in the stamp newspapers, at
the American Philatelic Society web site, which is
stamps-dot-org, or at virtual-stamp-club-dot-com.
However, if you're looking for a stamp store or office, they're
usually listed in your Yellow Pages under "Stamps For
Collectors." Or, for all types of stamp dealers, try the A-P-S
Web site -- again, that's stamps-dot-org -- or the American
Stamp Dealers Association: A-S-D-A-Online-dot-com. You can
also call these two organizations: The A-P-S is in State College,
Pennsylvania, and the A-S-D-A is in Glen Cove, New York.
Most stamp dealers now do mail order of some sort, so even if
there isn't a stamp store near you, there's no reason you can't
buy and sell stamps.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
