September 9-10, 2000:
From Sales Circuits to Electronic Circuits
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
For decades, members of the American Philatelic Society could
sell stamps by placing them in special books, which would
then be mailed from one potential buyer to another. They
still can.
However, the explosion of web auctions has cut into that
business, and the A-P-S recently decided to try Internet sales
itself. However, it didn't want to compete with established
sites like eBay.
Instead, the A-P-S has opened a net-price store...sort of like
a cooperative. Members send stamps they want to sell to the
A-P-S, which then puts them up for sale on the Internet at a
fixed price. The stamps are checked and guaranteed genuine.
When sold, the society takes care of shipping and credit card
processing.
Anyone can browse the Stamp Store, but only members can buy
and sell.
In the first 24 hours, without any publicity, Stamp-Store-dot-org
sold eleven hundred dollars of material to 22 purchasers...AND it
signed up three new members.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
