December 16-17, 2000:
Commemorating the Never-Ending Election.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Now that it's finally over, you may want to add a memento
to your collection.
Just before Election Day, Liberia's agent in this country
announced the African nation that was founded by U-S slaves
had produced two stamps...one featuring Al Gore, the other
George W Bush. The loser's stamps would be destroyed the
next day, and the winner's would be issued.
Instead, in the confusion, Liberia issued BOTH stamps, then
pulled both...and is now putting the Bush stamps back on sale.
And while we were watching Florida, a Baltimore company
offered what it said was a pair of stamps from Turkmenistan,
a former Soviet republic, that shows a cartoon of Gore and
Bush each pulling on the presidential seal. However, all the
wording on the sheet is in English, which the Turkmen don't
use...and there are other indicators that it's a bogus issue.
These stamps aren't for purists...but they could be FUN for
your collection...as a souvenir of the circus we just
finished.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
