June 2-3, 2001:
It really IS a big deal.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
One of those Today In History features notes that Monday is
the ninth anniversary of the day the Young Elvis stamp design
beat the Older Elvis painting. Not even stamp collectors pay
THAT much attention to the stamp!
I also received an announcement from a pet population
control group crowing that it's been told it's getting a stamp
next year, encouraging us to spay and neuter our pets.
Go to the official West Point bicentennial Web site, and
you'll be told there's a stamp coming out next year for
THAT, too.
These groups are PROUD that their issue merits a stamp, while
others push for their own issues with Web sites and
letter-writing campaigns. Recent hopefuls include poets,
patriots, movie stars and diseases. The Postal Service
receives thousands of requests a year. Maybe a dozen or so
are granted.
Forget about e-mail, electronic bill-paying, or whether
anybody actually USES anything but flag stamps: It's still an
honor to be on a U-S stamp.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
