Seeing Red Over Purple Hearts
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
New York State Senate Republicans this past week became the
latest politicians to climb aboard the Purple Heart stamp
band-wagon. Soldiers are awarded the medal when wounded in
the line of duty.
One Senator invoked the magic words, without which no
campaign for a stamp subject is complete: If we can have a
stamp for Bugs Bunny and the Three Stooges, why not one for
the Purple Heart?
Sorry,Senator, there's no U-S stamp for the Stooges...but
there ARE stamps for obscure politicians.
Jokes aside, Purple Heart recipients are certainly worthy of
a stamp. In fact, the Postal Service ISSUED a stamped
envelope in their honor in 1982. The politicians and veterans
groups, however, want a stamp.
Also this past week, the U-S issued its second Veterans stamp
in two years, because veterans groups complained they didn't
like last year's design -- although it sold well.
So I expect to SEE a Purple Heart stamp in the near future.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
