Tuning up for the Maestro.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Right before the New York Philharmonic begins its concert
of Leonard Bernstein music next Tuesday evening, the U-S
will issue a stamp honoring the composer, conductor and
performer.
The stamp had originally been scheduled for Carnegie Hall
in late September, closer to the anniversary of Bernstein's
birth, but his estate suggested instead the free outdoor
concert on the Great Lawn of Central Park. Violinist Joshua
Bell, who recently released a C-D of Bernstein's works,
will be the featured soloist. Excerpts from "West Side Story,"
"Candide" and "On The Town" will be performed -- and tens of
thousands are expected to attend.
The event follows new-stamp ceremonies before three major-league
baseball games last month, for stamps remembering great ballparks.
Thousands were also in attendance for those contests.
While the stamps aren't the focus at these huge events, and it's
not certain how much attention anyone is paying, they just might
create new interest in our hobby.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
