Hawaii One-Five-Oh


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


One hundred and fifty years ago, Hawaii was an independent country, issuing
its own postage stamps. The first four were for use by Christian
missionaries to send letters back home to the United States.


The U-S Postal Service for the past several years has been reprinting some
of ITS classic stamps...but this past week, it took the unusual step of
reprinting ANOTHER COUNTRY's classic stamps, these Hawaiian Missionaries, as
they're called.


Postage back then was five cents for Hawaii, two cents for the ship's
captain, and six more cents to send the letter to the East Coast of the U-S.
Two of the stamps covered the whole 13-cent rate. Another stamp was two
cents, for newspapers, and the fourth was a nickel. The new versions are
thirty-seven cents each.


Don't look for these stamps at your regular post office, though. While they
ARE good for postage, they're only being sold at special outlets, or you can
order them by telephone at 800-stamp-24 or on the Web at U-S-P-S-dot-com.
