Collecting Grandfather.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Harlan Fiske Stone is a well-known collector of Swiss stamps, but as a
boy...
"I first found my name on a stamp when a relative with the new 3¢ stamp
showing my grandfather, who was Chief Justice of the United States Supreme
Court.
RUNS :11
That was 1948. Stone recently decided to put together a collection of first
day covers -- envelopes with stamps postmarked on the first day the stamps
were on sale.
"At this point I have probably about 60 different cachets on first day
covers."
RUNS :08
A cachet is the design collectors often put on these envelopes.
Stone has something other exhibitors may not: He has family mail.
"I have recipients like my grandmother, who was the widow of the Supreme
Court Chief Justice, I have mail to myself in Switzerland that summer."
RUNS :06
Just before his father died, Stone found a stash of unused stamps, and today
uses them on his mail.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
