Waiting For Mickey.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The U-S has wanted to issue stamps with Disney themes for some time, but about a
decade ago, Disney said no to all postage stamps.
The first full-length animated movie, Snow White, WAS included among the
accomplishments of the 1930s, but the stamp wasn't publicized -- not even shown on
post office posters.
"They wanted to be on U.S. stamps, yes, but they had a policy in place when we
did Celebrate the Century that they were not going to do stamps at all. But then
they re-thought their policy and came back and said 'We're willing to talk.'"
RUNS :13
Chief stamp developer Terry McCaffrey promises when the U-S does issue its first
Disney stamps next year, they'll be quite different from those issued by third-world
countries in the past: They won't just be scenes from the cartoons. But he can't
say yet what the subjects will be, or even how many stamps will be issued in how many
years.
The Disney people have a reputation for being very particular so it may be some time
before we know the details.
And that's stamp collecting this week. I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
