A Pox On Pex
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This is a busy time of year for major stamp shows. This month and next see ROPEX,
COMPEX, NAPEX...
What's a PEX? It's an acronym for "Philatelic Exhibition." ROPEX is the Rochester
Philatelic Exhibition, for example.
But that word "Philatelic" doesn't mean much to non-collectors, either. It's the
fancy word for stamp collecting. No one knows where it came from, really. In English,
it's spelled with a P-H....in other languages, it starts with an F. And stamp
collectors are "philatelists."
But back to stamp shows.....running an ad for LLOYD-PEX doesn't tell new and prospective
stamp collectors what that is. Sure, the ad or commercial can say "the LLOYDPEX stamp
show," but that's extra words. Why not just take a pass on PEX?
The show organizers in Denver did recently. The show formerly known as ROMPEX -- Rocky
Mountain Philatelic Exhibition -- is now called the Rocky Mountain STAMP SHOW.
And several years earlier, the American Philatelic Society -- there's that word again
-- renamed its convention as simply "STAMP SHOW," while the American Topical Association,
the people who collect by subject, changed TOPEX to -- ready? -- the National Topical
Stamp Show.
COMPEX is in Chicago, by the way, and NAPEX is the Washington-area show. Absolutely clear,
right?
