Annual urban legends

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

It's the time of the year when some untrue stories about the postal service get more play
than they should, so let's see if we can drive a stake through their hearts.

One is that Post Offices will no longer sell you stamps. Nonsense. What IS true is that the
vending machines that sold stamps for cash are being removed. Most of them no longer work,
and there are many other ways and places to buy stamps, including local stores and new
machines in many post offices that accept credit cards.

There's a story going around that the Postal Service has issued a stamp celebrating the
Muslim religion. The Eid stamp has been around for six years, and has sold well enough that
it was reissued in September at the new letter rate. Eid is a Muslim holiday.

And while we're at it, this one may show up soon, so let's spike it right now: Yes, the
Black Heritage stamp series IS continuing. The next one honors writer Charles Chesnutt, and
comes out in late January.
