The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Stamp collecting organizations -- local and national -- have a problem. Not as many
people join any more, and few want to lead.

It's not just stamp collecting. You'll see it in the non-philatelic world -- in P-T-A's,
churches, scouts, community bands, all sorts of groups.

People used to join the American Philatelic Society or Rotary just to say, "I'm a member!"

Now, people join if there are tangible benefits for them, and leave when there aren't. And
volunteer to be an officer? Forget about it.

There's also another factor at work here: The economy. Many people are working longer hours
to make up for the earnings they've lost....or to make up extra work because their employers
have cut OTHER personnel. Instead of a stamp club meeting, they're going to a networking
meeting to try to find job leads.

The result of both trends is that many local stamp clubs and national stamp societies are
folding, or restricting their activities.

That's too bad. While you CAN collect stamps all by yourself, with little contact with the
outside world, there are some parts of it that are much more fun with a group.
