Virtual Exhibiting.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

One of the attractions at many stamp shows are…. Well, the stamps that are shown – the
exhibits of rare and unusual stamps and pieces of mail.

I'm not likely to own one of those upside-down airplane stamps, worth about a million
dollars apiece, but I've seen several of them in person… with only a sheet of plexiglass
separating us.

Often the exhibits are entered in competitions, both against other exhibits and against
a point system. Others are just shown.

Because exhibitors are always changing these mini-collections, they're not often
published in books.

So pretty much the only way to see these rare stamps has been to attend shows –  until
now, with the Internet. Many exhibits can be seen online without ever leaving your home.

Online exhibiting isn't likely to replace displaying stamps at shows. It's too easy to
include stamps you don't own on a website, or fix the defects in the ones you do. And
there's still that thrill of seeing something valuable in person – sort of like the
difference between a picture of the Mona Lisa and standing in front of the real thing at
the Louvre.
