Postal Problems.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The U-S Postal Service says it's going to stop delivering mail on Saturdays. However,
it will still deliver packages — which I think is the future of postal agencies — on
Saturday, and those post offices that were open on Saturdays still will be open on
Saturdays.
The Postal Services lost 16 billion dollars last year, and says cutting Saturday
deliveries will save it two billion. That's not enough.
Me, I think all this is a shot across the bow, a way to get attention to a real problem:
Congress has hamstrung the Postal Service. It can't balance its books.
What does all this mean for stamp collectors? Not much, really. Stamps are a very small
part of the bottom line. Oh, we might see some bloated 15- and 20-stamp issues. And some
local post offices will panic over finances and be less cooperative. But most serious
collectors use post office boxes, which means they'll still get their mail on Saturdays.
