The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Three copies of the most famous mistake stamp sold at separate auctions recently… fetching
a range of prices in the six figures.

The stamp is the Inverted Jenny error… the 1918 air-mail stamp with the airplane upside
down. A sheet of one hundred was purchased by a collector at a Washington, D-C, post
office.

Because of the printing processes of the time, each of the stamps is slightly different,
making some copies more desirable than others.

One of the more unusual was encased in a glass locket along with a correct copy of the
stamp, and given to a collector’s wife. It sold for just over 212 thousand dollars.

Another, better centered, sold for almost 265 thousand.

But a third copy, also well-centered, but with perfect glue on the back, brought a net
of 575 thousand dollars -- 400 thousand dollars more than the same stamp sold for twenty
years ago.
