May 16-17, 1998:

Get 'em while they're hot

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

A recent discovery that not all Tweety & Sylvester stamps
were created equal has led to a stampede to buy that
variety. Don't bother looking for these so-called "press
sheets" at your post office: The uncut sheets of 60 stamps
were never available anywhere but by mail, and they're
sold out now anyway.

Last year, many collectors missed out on a different Bugs
Bunny variety, while others bought them for the face value
of three dollars and twenty cents. Today, those special
panes sell for more than a hundred dollars.

What's interesting here is that the Postal Service didn't
realize it was creating a hot collectible in either case.
It was a mistake. And when the agency TRIED to create a
hot collectible -- by limiting the time for sales
-- collectors yawned.

We're hearing -- and it's only a rumor -- some of the
Celebrate the Century 1930s subjects. Among them: Jesse
Owens, the Golden Gate Bridge...and Monopoly. Those stamps
aren't due until next fall.

And that's stamp collecting this week.
