The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

If no one uses or cares about stamps any more, why did an animal rights group the other
day unveil postage stamps showing famous vegetarians?

Never mind that those weren't stamps issued by the U-S Postal Service. If stamps don't
matter, why did People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals produce the sheet honoring
20 people who don't eat meat?

Why did the lieutenant governor of Louisiana on that same day show up at a ceremony
unveiling the design of the Statehood anniversary stamp that won't be issued for another
five months?

Why did the press pay so much attention to the decision to start honoring living people
on official U-S stamps as soon as next year?

Because stamps DO matter. They're symbols of the country that issues them, whether they
show famous people or cute pets or scenic landscapes.

And, although I groan every time I read this phrase in a too-cute newspaper article, it
IS a "stamp of approval."
